Our Grade 8 geographers recently stepped into the shoes of cartographers! To understand how flat maps show massive mountains and valleys, students participated in an immersive, hands-on activity that brought abstract concepts to life.
🎨 Phase 1: The 3D Build
Students molded detailed 3D landforms out of clay to get a tactile understanding of elevation, peaks, and terrain variations.
📐 Phase 2: Tracing the Terrain.
Taking their skills to the next level, they carefully traced the contour lines layer by layer from their physical models onto paper. Through this hands-on mapping process, they discovered firsthand how closely spaced lines represent steep cliffs, while wider lines show gentle, gradual slopes.
Learning by doing makes geography stick for life! Watch our brilliant students in action. 👇
